After being incapacitated for most of the weekend as a result of going to a friend’s bachelor party, I found out that other people were being productive and posted a lot of articles over the last two days. So I’ve decided to organize this week’s Over the Weekend post into categories: Art & Design, Lifestyle, and Technology
Art & Design
The Functionality designed this canopy entitled PaperVillain, made from 2,452 newspaper hats which took 17 people 3 weeks to make. It was showcased at The Secret Garden Party this past July in London which is basically the British equivalent to Burning Man. Via Dezeen
Paper flowers may not be a new concept, but these 12 “birth flowers” (like birth stones) come on cards which you can push out and wear as rings on your fingers. Unknown is if this design by Tithi Kutchamuch uses recycled paper. Pictured cards: March- Jonquil and April- Daisy. Via Dezeen
Keeping with the paper theme, here are some trendy (and I say that in the nicest way) wrapping papers by Erin Ruth made from “60% recycled materials and 30% post consumer waste with all of the ink being soy based.” Via ReNest
For many, coffee and cigarettes go together like milk and cookies. This ashtray made from coffee grounds, designed by Ryohei Yoshiyuki, makes sense then especially since coffee grounds absorb the ash smell. Via Dezeen
Nauti & Co make beautifully worn down one-of-a-kind nautical inspired furnishings salvaged from old boats and abandoned barns. Beauty does not come cheap though. The table pictured above is going for $2,400. Via ReNest
The Spoke Mirror made from upcycled bike wheels- Simple, elegant and eco-friendly. Via ReNest
DIY gas lamp article at Green Upgrader. First you have to find a bottle as nice as this one and I’m sure the attachment can be altered to make it look more natural.
All you ec0-fashionistas: The annual Junk to Funk fashion show is calling all artists for their 2009 show by the October 14th deadline. Via Haute*Nature
Lifestyle
- Treehugger has a good article on how to find a truly green eco-resort and not just some wannabe hotel.
- Get rid of your still-usable unwanted stuff at Listia. Via Treehugger
- A bag pool community for shopping (because I always forget to bring bags to the supermarket). Via Treehugger
- Saw an ad for Simple Shoes on Treehugger and now I want to buy a pair. 100% sustainability… nice.
Technology
- No batteries on these Korean developed vehicles which draw their power magnetically from underground power lines. Via Design Boom
- Los Angeles Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, promotes and poses for Toyota Prius. Via LA Times
- “Oil giants destroy rainforests to make palm oil diesel for motorists” Via Current
