Driftwood is his pencil and the ocean is his pink tipped eraser. Surfer and chef, Jim Denevan’s unique sand drawings have received much acclaim over the years from the Headlands in Marin, Yerba Buena in San Francisco and PS1/MOMA in New York City.

Jim will spend up to 7 hours and walk up to 30 miles at low tide, to only have the tide push act like the cursor performing a backspace.

No measurement devices are used and many of tools he uses to make these designs is from driftwood found on the beach.  Denevan’s design make me think he is a reincarnate chief of the ancient Peru tribe who made the famous Nazca Lines. seen from the sky.

These larger than life creations give anonymous crop cirlce artists a new competitor.  From the photographers POV, would do well with most mediums of painting, furniture or clothing, but the beach gives them frailty with the photography giving a sense of permanence.
